"The Maiden", as she is known. Died, age 15 -- sacrificed to Pachamama, the Inca earth goddess, about 500 years ago. She was discovered, as an extraordinarily well preserved mummy, in 1999 near the 6,739 meter (about 22,000 feet) summit of Llullaillaco, in Argentina. This is Figure 1A from the article. Mummies of two other children were also discovered there. One of them was analyzed by the same methods discussed here, and was negative on all tests. Previous radiological examination of the Maiden had revealed various lesions, including in the lungs. Visual inspection revealed nasal mucus under the nostrils. The key new step in this work was to apply a method that is just emerging: total analysis of all the proteins, or "shotgun proteomics". This is done by mass spectrometry; as with so many modern methods, it provides a "computer full" of data that is beyond ordinary comprehension. In this case, analysis of the proteins from the Maiden's mouth showed proteins of the immune system, which would be expected for someone with an active infection. Some of these proteins were characteristic of mycobacterial infections. Mycobacteria include the species that causes tuberculosis (TB), Mycobacterium tuberculosis. With evidence of lung damage and evidence of infection, perhaps mycobacterial, the authors did an additional test. They looked at the DNA in the same samples from the Maiden. Preliminary DNA analysis seems to show DNA from mycobacteria, but is insufficient to point to a specific member of the group. All the evidence together suggests that the Maiden had an active mycobacterial infection. An important point is the value of having the different kinds of evidence. DNA evidence is "in vogue", but simply finding DNA from an organism would be insufficient to indicate active disease. Many people carry the TB bacterium, for example, without active disease. The key contribution here is the protein work: analyzing the proteins from the mouth shows that there is an immune reaction to a pathogen. They then couple the protein findings with the radiological examination of the lung and the DNA evidence to suggest a diagnosis.

Narendra Modi visit Sivagiri

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the golden jubilee of Sree Narayana Dharma Meemamsa Parishad by lighting lamp at Sivagiri Mutt at Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday.

I am proud to be associated with RSS: Narendra Modi

Narendra Modi  said that he was proud of the fact that he has had a long association with the RSS. Addressing the crowd at Sree Narayana Mutt at nearby Sivagiri Modi said, “I am proud of the fact that I have been associated with RSS. I have imbibed good values from the RSS.” He also said that he had place for everyone in his heart. Modi devoted most of his speech to the role played by spiritual leaders like Sree Narayana Guru in preparing the ground for the national movement and freedom struggle, saying if their ideals had been fully carried out, many problems faced by the country now could have been resolved. Stating that India today is a "youthful" country where 65 per cent of the population is aged under 35, he said this factor is the nation's biggest asset for it to forge ahead.

Sivagiri cannot be communalized, says Chandy

Nobody can communalize Sivagiri, said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. The teachings of Sree Narayana Guru are gaining importance in the state. Chandy said this while replying to questions in connection with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state. Chandy said that he is not responding much on the visit of Modi. The nobility and importance of Sivagiri will not be blemished by Modi’s visit. There is nothing wrong in Shibu Baby John visiting Modi. I don’t agree with the campaign that the visit was to know about the Gujarat Model. In reply to a question, Chandy said there is nothing to learn from Gujarat.

Italian marines happy not to return to India for trial

The two Italian marines, Salvatore Latorre and Massimiliano Girone, have expressed their happiness after their Foreign Ministry made it clear that the marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen would not return to India when their court-allowed leave ends this month. The two marines were allowed to go back to Italy to vote in February's General Elections. The marines, who had allegedly shot dead two Indian fishermen in the Arabian Sea, said they were happy to stay back in Italy and join work. "Now we are finally happy. We are happy to go back to work," Latorre told Italy's ANSA news agency. However, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing, Tariq Anwar is hopeful of resolution of the Italian marines' crisis. "The Indian External Affairs Ministry is examining the issue. I think the MEA has taken view of this decision and they have chosen to review the situation and talk to their Italian counterparts, after talks some solution will come out," said Tariq Anwar, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing. Two Italian sailors charged with killing two Indian fishermen lost their Supreme Court bid in January this year to be tried on home soil. The sailors, members of a military security team protecting the cargo ship Enrica Lexie, said they mistook the fishermen for pirates off the southern Indian state of Kerala in February 2012. Italy challenged India's right to try the sailors in Supreme Court, saying the shooting took place in international waters, outside the jurisdiction of Indian courts. Indian authorities accuse the sailors of shooting unarmed fishermen in a "contiguous zone" where Indian law applies.

Italy's decision on marines unacceptable, says Chandy

TVPM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Tuesday termed as unacceptable Italy's decision not to send its two marines to India, who were being tried for killing two fishermen. He said he will take up the issue with the external affairs ministry. The Supreme Court in February allowed Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, accused of killing two Indian fishermen to return to Italy to vote in the Feb 24-25 national elections. It had earlier allowed them to go home for Christmas. "I am reaching Delhi (Tuesday) night and I will take this issue up with the external affairs ministry. We are also looking to take up this issue legally," Chandy told IANS after Italy announced that the marines will not be returning to India. The Italian government claimed that New Delhi "does not have jurisdiction over the case". Chandy said: "You should see the earnestness in how Kerala pursued this case in the... courts and also in the apex court in the country. Our stand remains the same that they should stand trial here according to the Indian law." In no way would this would be acceptable to Kerala, he said. The apex court had ruled that the case need not be tried in Kerala, instead a special court be set up in Delhi. The two marines have been at the centre of a year-long international row for allegedly shooting dead two Indian fishermen Ajesh Binki and Gelastine after mistaking them for pirates near the Kerala coast in February 2012. Italy claims the incident occurred in international waters and has been trying to get Latorre and Girone tried in Italian courts, while India contends the shooting occurred in its own territory.

OP ticket charge hike withdrawn

Apr 17, 2012

Health Minister V S Sivakumar has announced that the government is withdrawing the recent hike in OP ticket charges in government hospitals. This was the first file that the new Health Minister signed after assuming office. The old OP ticket rates (Rs.1) would continue, he said. It was just last week that the government had issued orders revising the OP ticket rates in government health-care facilities. While the BPL category patients were exempted, the OP ticket charge for APL category was hiked to Rs 5. However, this had sparked off widespread protests with opposition leader V S Achuthanandan leading the charge that this was an anti-people measure and that it was the government's responsibility to take care of the health of the people.

Petrol pump operators threaten strike on April 23

Tuesday, April 17, 2012:
Thiruvananthapuram: Petrol pump operators today threatened to go on a one-day strike on April 23 demanding a hike in commission they get on fuel sales.
“It has been decided that all petrol pumps of public sector oil marketing companies in the country shall observe one day protest closure in the first instance from midnight of April 22-23 till the midnight of April 23-24,” Federation of All India Petroleum Traders (FAIPT) General Secretary Ajay Bansal said here.
Further, FAIPT, which claims to represent dealers of over 40,000 petrol pumps in the country, will go on an indefinite strike from midnight of April 29-30, if their demands are not met.
He said the oil ministry has not implemented recommendation of its own committee that was constituted to go into the issue of commission paid to dealers.
The committee headed by Joint Secretary (Marketing) in Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas had recommended a dealer commission of 0.39 paise per litre on petrol and 0.17 paise a litre on diesel. But the ministry gave only 0.27 paise for petrol and 0.15 paise for diesel.
“Our demand for 5% commission on the invoice value of petroleum products has been turned down by the committee without any proper reason,” he said.
